Goombay
Genre: Festivals
Since 1982, the YMI Cultural Center has presented Goombay!, one of several worldwide
variations of the centuries-old celebration. Goombay! can be viewed as a
Cultural Expression of a people. Goombay! emerged during slavery days in Bermuda.
Both music and rhythm were brought from Africa
and West Indies. The YMI Cultural Center's Goombay!
Festival brings a variety of entertainment that delights every festival-goer.
From Steel Drums, African-American Dancers, local Gospel Groups, and
Contemporary Rhythm Bands, the activities are geared for families. The
Festival-goer can enjoy an authentic Caribbean Meal at Island</st1:placetype> of Delight Cafe and see vendors line the streets with
everything from ice cream to Third World Crafts. The African-Caribbean style
festival is brought to the Asheville Community with pleasure by the YMI Cultural Center, Asheville Parks and Recreation Department, North
Carolina
Arts Council, Community Arts Council of WNC and the Friends of the YMI Cultural Center.
