Shindig on the Green
Genre: Music (bluegrass, country/western, folk, other), Dance, Festivals
Shindig on the Green is a joyfully
spontaneous (and free) celebration of traditional and old-time string
bands, bluegrass, ballad singers, big circle mountain dancers and
cloggers held most summer Saturday evenings in downtown Asheville.
Between 3,000 and 5,000 people attend the time-honored Shindig on the
Green, its stage show, and surrounding informal jam sessions on Shindig
Saturdays. Visitors are encouraged to bring their instruments, a lawn
chair or blanket, family and friends.
Shindig on the Green takes place in the heart of downtown Asheville at Pack Square Park's Roger McGuire Green. The stage shows are performed on the Bascom Lamar Lunsford stage, named for the founder of the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, the sister event to Shindig and the nation's longest running folk festival.. The Folk Heritage Committee produces these events to support the preservation and
continuation of the traditional music, dance and storytelling heritage
of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
